The OV-chipkaart (travel ticket)

The OV-chipkaart is the means of payment used for public transportation throughout the Netherlands. There are two types: the anonymous or personal OV-chipkaart. You can use the OV-chipkaart to travel on GVB vehicles as well as other transportation companies in the Netherlands. And, it also works for the train.

Personal OV-chipkaart

- You can load all travel products on the personal OV-chipkaart, including season tickets.
- You can opt for automatic loading, which ensures that you will always have a sufficient balance on the card.
- If lost or stolen, you can have this card blocked.
- The personal card is needed for the age-based fare reduction for children between four and eleven years of age and seniors 65 or older.
- A personal card is valid for five years.

Anonymous OV-chipkaart

- This card is not personal.
- Both you and other people may use this card (but not during the same trip).
- After purchasing this card and loading a balance or travel product, the card is ready for use.
- An anonymous card is valid for four to five years.

An anonymous OV-chipkaart can be purchased at GVB Tickets & Info, a GVB Service point and at Ticket Vending Machines at all metro stations and stops.

Separate paper chip tickets

If you do not have an OV-chipkaart, you can purchase a paper chip ticket. You buy this ticket pre-loaded with a travel product. A paper chip ticket allows you to travel for a specific period of time such as 1 day (24 hours).

- After the travel product is used up, the card can no longer be used.
- A paper GVB OV-chipkaart is only valid on GVB public transportation. ATTENTION: always check in and out using this card. If you forgot to check in and out, your card will become invalid and you will not be able to use it to travel.
