Art in the metro

It became clear in 2008 that the lifespan of the 30 year old silver metros (Zilvermeeuwen) had to be extended. The most important question was: how do we change the old metro cars so that passengers can once more ride them with pleasure? The solution consisted of two ingredients: art and a special film to prevent graffiti. The municipality of Amsterdam took the initiative working together with the cultural organisation, Amsterdam Fund for the Arts, and GVB to start up the "Art in the metro" project.

The works of art can be seen in the metro cars on routes 50, 53, and 54. You will see drawings, photos, and a combination of both. The different works of art have something for everything and add some pleasantness to the trip.

The photos below show the inside of the metro cars. Artist name and carriage number are given in each photo.
